The Exumas Staniel Cay and Big Majors
|

After seven days of visiting and relaxing and doing some
work on the boat, we left Georgetown on the morning of
January 14th. We had a comfortable day sail to Black
Point in the Exumas, where we spent the night.
The next morning we got an early start and traveled to
Staniel Cay, a great little area with lots of boats. We
anchored in nearby Big Majors and later met several
cruisers at a sundowner on the beach, including a
couple from Manteo, North Carolina, one of my favorite
areas.
John did a real James Bond in Thunderball Cave while
trying to visit it during high tide. Sometimes he really
should listen to me when I tell him stuff.
Following this harrowing adventure we sought out many
drinks at the marina. There we chatted with a couple
from Palmer Lake, Colorado. After Nancy retired from
teaching at Frontier Elementary, she and Frank bought
a boat and have begun sailing! What a concept! We
enjoyed exchanging adventures and misadventures! It’s
a small world!
One of the nearby beaches is inhabited by a well-fed
group of cats and pigs. No clue why they are there, but
as far as I could tell they have a good thing going. Every
boat that anchors there goes ashore to feed the pigs
and cats. Not a bad life, if you ask me. Just lying on the
beach, waiting to be fed.
If you ever get a chance to visit Thunderball Cave, (above)
remember to go at "slack tide". It's not that much fun
otherwise, John will tell you. He survived the ordeal (below).
The picture really isn't blurry. That's just how he looked
when he finally made his way out.
After the
Thunderball
Cave
incident,
we headed
straight for
the marina
bar.
Ready for the next meal, the cats and pigs head out to meet
us. The pigs(below) like to be up close and personal, and will
even try to get into your dinghy.
We waited out a rather nasty cold front at Big Majors, and then headed to the Nassau area. We anchored near Rose Island, spent
a peaceful night, and then headed off. We decided to make the crossing to Ft. Lauderdale before the next cold front came in, so
we motored off to make that weather window.
We spent a peaceful night at Rose Island, near Nassau. I motored out the next morning. Did I mention that the weather was not as warm
as I had become accustomed to? I realize it is winter there, but please . . .
